In the year following an eight-cent increase in the federal tax on a pack of cigarettes, sales of cigarettes fell ten percent.  In contrast, in the year prior to the tax increase, sales had fallen one percent.  The volume of cigarette sales is therefore strongly related to the after-tax price of a pack of cigarettes.

The argument above requires which of following assumptions?

选项:

A、During the year following the tax increase, the pretax price of a pack of cigarettes did not increase by as much as it had during the year prior to the tax increase.
B、The one percent fall in cigarette sales in the year prior to tax increase was due to a smaller tax increase.
C、The pretax price of a pack of cigarettes gradually decreased throughout the year before and the year after the tax increase.
D、For the year following the tax increase, the pretax price of a pack of cigarettes was not eight or more cents lower than it had been the previous year.

An overly centralized economy, not the changes in the climate, is responsible for the poor agricultural production in Country X since its new government came to power. Neighboring Country Y has experienced the same climatic conditions, but while agricultural production has been falling in Country X, it has been rising in Country Y.

Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument above?

Today's technology allows manufacturers to make small cars more fuel-efficient now than at any time in their production history.
我的逻辑-any time不对,是除了这个时间之外的其他时间,排除ABE;老师说CD中D的More fuel efficient,修饰问题,their指代car有指代问题;我选D的原因their指代manufacturers,语义也通,在制造业产量的历史中,今天的技术允许制造业制造更多小车;并且more修饰fuel-efficient,一般修饰都有就近原则,而且small用smaller肯定更好,而不是more small;C 中的those指代small cars,且没有歧义…选不出来;

A physically active lifestyle has been shown to help increase longevity. In the Wistar region of Bellaria, the average age at death is considerably higher than in any other part of the country. Wistar is the only mountainous part of Bellaria. A mountainous terrain makes even such basic activities as walking relatively strenuous; it essentially imposes a physically active lifestyle on people. Clearly, this circumstance explains the long lives of people in Wistar.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

The Quechuans believed that all things participated in both the material level and the mystical level of reality, and many individual Quechuans claimed to have contact with it directly with an ichana (dream) experience.

Press Secretary:  Our critics claim that the President's recent highway project cancellations demonstrate a vindictive desire to punish legislative districts controlled by opposition parties.  They offer as evidence the fact that 90 percent of the projects canceled were in such districts.  But all of the canceled projects had been identified as wasteful in a report written by respected nonpartisan auditors.  So the President's choice was clearly motivated by sound budgetary policy, not partisan politics.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the press secretary's argument depends?

Combining enormous physical strength with higher intelligence, the Neanderthals appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path, but their relatively sudden disappearance during the Paleolithic era indicates that an inability to adapt to some environmental change led to their extinction.

On Earth, among the surest indications of sunspot cycles are believed to be the rate that trees grow, as seen in the rings visible in the cross sections of their trunks.
我做题时候花了很久,看不懂,放弃,听了一下老师的做题过程,我自己看了半天看不懂文章,老师思考:看了句子,大概想说cycle是一个indications就像树桩上的年轮,AB排除因为on earth后又来一个修饰语,不太好,排除;as seen这里有一个并列,in the rings visible和among the surest indications并列,语义的确是这么说(虽然划线部分我没看懂这个cycle的indication/indication是速度),并且as seen in the rings,和as in the rings差别挺大的,没想着非要平行;排除C ;剩下DE,D中,believe动词发起者不明排除D; 对于我来说这道题,最困难的是找句意/找主语,what is believed?我觉得是sunspot cycles,但是among sth, sth are believed,那我要分开sunspot和cycles,但是没有逗号,我也认了,但是还是看不懂,换了一种理解,抛弃了among我理解“among the surest indications of sunspot cycle被认为是树生长的速度”… 然后as seen。。。

Several financial officers of the company spoke on condition that they not be named in the press reports.

Studies in restaurants show that the tips left by customers who pay their bill in cash tend to be larger when the bill is presented on a tray that bears a credit-card logo. Consumer psychologists hypothesize that simply seeing a credit-card logo makes many credit-card holders willing to spend more because it reminds them that their spending power exceeds the cash they have immediately available.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the psychologists’ interpretation of the studies?
