In the year following an eight-cent increase in the federal tax on a pack of cigarettes, sales of cigarettes fell ten percent.  In contrast, in the year prior to the tax increase, sales had fallen one percent.  The volume of cigarette sales is therefore strongly related to the after-tax price of a pack of cigarettes.

选项:

A、During the year following the tax increase, the pretax price of a pack of cigarettes did not increase by as much as it had during the year prior to the tax increase.
B、The one percent fall in cigarette sales in the year prior to tax increase was due to a smaller tax increase.
C、The pretax price of a pack of cigarettes gradually decreased throughout the year before and the year after the tax increase.
D、For the year following the tax increase, the pretax price of a pack of cigarettes was not eight or more cents lower than it had been the previous year.

Only a reduction of 10 percent in the number of scheduled flights using Greentown’s airport will allow the delays that are so common there to be avoided. Hevelia airstrip, 40 miles away, would, if upgraded and expanded, be an attractive alternative for fully 20 percent of the passengers using Greentown airport. Nevertheless, experts reject the claim that turning Hevelia into a full-service airport would end the chronic delays at Greentown.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to justify the experts’ position?

In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doing household chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly sixhours a week.

The first English settlers to establish a permanent colony in America did it not at Plymouth but along the shore of the James River west of Chesapeake Bay.
but instead-语意重复, but rather语义重复-这俩个我非常不敏感;排除CE;D的不平行结构排除;留下AB;A的it,特定指代往前找-permanent colony感觉可以,也就是说第一批英国移民did permanent colony 不在 P这个地方,但在某个海岸边;but前后连接的/对比的就是俩个不同的地方,且都有介词;不过我感觉就是某人did sth to 达到某个目的这个说得通;如果缺少did一样东西,语义不太对;所以我感觉要保留it;老师说so可以指代前面这个事情,那就是permanent colony,因为有did,所以so指代了名词-的确so可以做代词,但是it的特指也没有问题吧-老师说It指代问题;

Although people in France consume fatty foods at a rate comparable to the United States, their death rates from heart disease are far lower in France.

A year ago, Dietz Foods launched a yearlong advertising campaign for its canned tuna. Last year Dietz sold 12 million cans of tuna compared to the 10 million sold during the previous year, an increase directly attributable to new customers brought in by the campaign. Profits from the additional sales, however, were substantially less than the cost of the advertising campaign. Clearly, therefore, the campaign did nothing to further Dietz’s economic interests.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

Past assessments of the Brazilian rain forest have used satellite images to tally deforested areas, where farmers and ranchers have clear-cut and burned all the trees, but such work has not addressed either logging, which is the removal of only selected trees, as well as surface fires, burning down individual trees but do not denude the forest.
所以work is addressed (by) logging很合理;然后我比较无脑选了removing 和burning搭配很好,而B的logging和后面or…

The global-warming effect of ocean white caps are one of the many aspects of the ocean environment that are not yet incorporated in any detail into the computer models used for predicting how rising greenhouse gas concentrations could affect climate.

With employer-paid training, workers have the potential to become more productive not only in their present employment but also in any number of jobs with different employers. To increase the productivity of their workforce, many firms are planning to maintain or even increase their investments in worker training. But some training experts object that if a trained worker is hired away by another firm, the employer that paid for the training has merely subsidized a competitor. They note that such hiring has been on the rise in recent years.

Which of the following would, if true, contribute most to defeating the training experts’ objection to the firms’ strategy?

Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

A new machine for harvesting corn will allow rows to be planted only fifteen inches apart, instead of the usual thirty inches.  Corn planted this closely will produce lower yields per plant.  Nevertheless, the new machine will allow corn growers to double their profits per acre because __________.
我拿到题目,理解了题意,看到题干说了closely会yield lower,我做题第一反应就是必须证明是否已经达到了这个界定范围-100 inches apart和99 inches apart并不会影响产量,所以题干中没有给出一个界定范围,也许选项中会给出也说不定-预判(!!老师说逻辑题尽量不要自我预判方法-危险,至少assumption唯一方法取非驳斥,其他方法都不可以);D我脑补了1)没有说达到某个界定范围,Plants增多并没有Lower yield per plant-可能收入会接近俩倍, 2)脑补了类似fixed cost概念,至少每亩土地的成本是不会变的,就是有些成本不管产量多少都固定不变,则俩个因素同时作用Profits达到俩倍也是可能的;A粗糙的看就是对的;老师说了因为成本大量下降,则利润双倍,但是rev没有说,其实逻辑也没有那么严密;如果A的逻辑不严密可以选,D也差不多;排除D的原因,老师说这个观点是almost,就是没有达到俩倍。(我没有想抬杠,但是我当时做题的时候感觉AD俩个我纠结了,我自己错题整理时候也说了A没有不对,但是,AD比较,D的选项信息和原文题干相似度更高,且信息量更少;A中给出新的信息比较多,可能风险比较大…我就选了D;D说了plants就almost double,但仍然不讨论是否yield per plant是否会变化,这也是合理的;
