A选项的时间逻辑表达没有B选项做得好。因为题干中提到的是what she then，这意味着前面发生的动作要在she earned as director之前，所以B选项的had been更能精确表达这个时间先后概念。老师讲的B选项用现在分词作定语修饰elephant不是问题。

选了C。首先看选项开头，排除DE，在ABC中选。又看了选项结尾，有明显的时态差异。划线句与后文形成比较，后文用的是过去式，AB选项进行时表示“正在赚钱”，从结构和语意上AB都不太合理。因此选了C，虽然用了there be并且用and连接使整个句子关系松散比较啰嗦，但是语法和句意逻辑上没有大毛病。

请教Tina老师，这道题我很愉快地排除了CDE，最后留了AB，然后就看语义呗～原文说的是then earned as director，但是A的现在进行时用法感觉特别奇怪，什么叫做它正在挣的与社会学家之后当director挣得一样？因为是then，所以有一个过去时间点，那么had been过去完成时可用，也符合语义的先后顺序，所以最终选了B。结果就错了，望老师指正，谢谢！
